News Web sites are starting to look a lot less like newspapers and a lot more like television.
CNN.com and ESPN.com are featuring video much more prominently on their home pages, often prompting visitors to press play before they begin to read. Even The Wall Street Journal has moved its video player front and center with a twice-a-day live newscast on WSJ.com.
A major reason is commercial. At a time when other categories of advertising dollars are shrinking, video ads are booming. News sites are adding more video inventory to keep pace with the demands of advertisers, and benefiting from the higher cost-per-thousands, or C.P.M.’s, that ads on those videos command. more

2010 In-Stream Video Advertising Predictions – Interview with Google

I interview Ari Paparo, Group Product Manager of Advertising Product for Google, about his forecast shared at the Chicago Interactive Marketing Association’s 7th Semiannual Interactive Marketing Survey, that in-stream video advertising will be “huge” in 2010, thanks to growing adoption by media sales agencies of Internet Advertising Bureau’s (IAB’s) development of video ad standards. Will this open up video ad serving to more businesses on the smaller scale?

Online video viewing in US increases by 34 percent
Out of the total of 12.7 billion online videos – which makes for a 34 percent increase from a year back - Google’s YouTube claimed the major share by providing 5.1 billion online video streams to 97 million unique viewers. A distant second place went to Fox Interactive Media with 439 million videos watched, and the third to Viacom Digital which had 325 million videos watched.

There is no reduction in overall online advertising growth, eMarketer believes online video advertising will buck the trend and expects online video advertising spending to grow from $587m in 2008 to $4.6b in 2013.
It can be difficult to find a “ray of light” amidst all the economic doom and gloom. Today, eMarketer released a study covering online advertising spending projections from 2007-2013 which includes some encouraging news about online video advertising growth. This study comes after a different eMarketer online advertising study from earlier 2008 online advertising by $1.3B (an increase of 11.3% for the year).


Online Video May Be the Silver Lining for  Marketing Budgets

Advertisers are planning to move their marketing dollars into the online video space next year.

Video ad spending will rise 45% in 2009 to reach $850 million. The company attributes the growth to more professional video content online and advertisers persistent need to reach new audiences: "They still need to reach online audiences and woo their shrinking wallets with messages that reach their hearts and minds—hence, more video."

The interview of about 400 senior level marketing and media executives for the online video, survey it released today, and found over two thirds of respondents — 67 percent — are planning to make online video the primary focus of their 2009 digital marketing campaigns. That's compared to 41 percent who plan to focus on social media campaigns, 34 percent on search and 32 percent on podcasts or webcasts.

Online video marketing is the key business differentiator for web companies wanting to communicate effectively their product profile and benefits within the shortest possible time. There is nothing else that comes close to the effectiveness and persuasion power of a well designed video message.

This doesn't mean that putting up a 10-min video tutorial on your site will automatically get you to double-up your conversion rate of new registrants or that you will instantly sell more of your products. There is more to effective video communication than just slamming some video content up on your web pages.
